Learning and Development
The Department for Education: Statutory framework for the early years foundation stage (effective from 1st September 2021), sets out the standard requirements for delivering quality early education and childcare for all children, from birth to five years old.
Please refer to the 'learning and development requirements', section 1.1 and the 'areas of learning and development', section 1.3 - 1.5.
All schools and Ofsted-registered early years providers must follow the EYFS, including childminders, pre-schools, nurseries and school reception classes.
The areas of learning and development
There are seven areas of learning and development in the EYFS that must shape educational programmes in early years settings. All areas of learning and development are equally important and inter-connect.
Three prime areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive.
Providers must also support children in four specific areas, through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied.
