EYFS Statutory framework published

Department of Education

The Department for Education (DfE) have confirmed that the reforms to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) will be rolled out nationally from the 1st September 2021.

The new EYFS statutory framework Early years foundation stage (EYFS) statutory framework - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) has now been published.  This is the revised and final EYFS framework that all registered nurseries, childminders, schools and pre-schools in England will follow from 1 September 2021.

Early years settings, other than registered EYFS reforms early adopters, must continue to follow the current EYFS framework until 1 September 2021. However, the revised framework is being made available to help all providers prepare for the changes to come.

There are also a number of small amendments to section 3, safety and welfare, to make existing requirements clearer and to provide updates. A summary of these amendments and why they have been made can be found here: Early years foundation stage (EYFS) statutory framework - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).

New DfE support for implementation

To support the sector as they prepare to implement the reforms, the DfE are providing a suite of supporting materials, including webinars for school leadership and practitioners and launching a new online support package for PVIs and childminders, as well as revising the EYFS Profile (EYFSP) Handbook.

Support that is already available for the sector includes:

  • The Department's new non-statutory curriculum guidance Development Matters published on 3 September 2020. This document provides a top-level view of how children develop and learn, and guides but does not replace, professional judgement. The department has sought feedback from early adopters on this and will consider making refinements ahead of statutory roll out of the reforms.
  • Foundation Years recently hosted Learn - Explore - Debate events focused on the revised EYFS with sessions on reducing unnecessary workload and self-regulation in the early years. The recordings and case studies from the events can be found here.

The DfE have published two new vodcasts on Foundation Years

There is a vodcast for Schools: Foundation Years vodcast: Understanding the revised EYFS - headteachers & senior leadership - YouTube. This is aimed at headteachers, senior leadership and governors in schools and gives essential messages from the DfE and Ofsted as well as additional case study information from Early Adopter schools.

There is a vodcast for Private, Voluntary and Independent settings and childminders: Foundation Years vodcast: Understanding the revised EYFS - PVIs & childminders - YouTube. This contains essential information for the sector about the reforms.

Start Well strongly recommend that you view the vodcasts as an essential starting point to plan for implementation of the EYFS reforms through summer and into the new academic year.

Bolton Start Well will be holding a series of events to follow up on these key messages and support colleagues in Bolton.
