Course Description

This E-Learning package is available upon request to access and complete any time.

Behaviour and self-regulation in the early years is a course designed for all early years practitioners working with children from birth to five years.  The course aims to support practitioners to learn ways to manage inappropriate behaviour and conflict in early years and understand how to prevent meltdowns and misunderstandings.

The course is split over two easy to digest modules.

How will this course help?

Module one

This module will cover:

  • Introduction: Handling inappropriate behaviours and conflicts;
  • Clarity of expectations, explaining, modelling and reinforcing 'golden rules';
  • The 'reliable adult', consistency, co-regulation and self-regulation;
  • Routines and self-regulation, choice, agency and responsibility; and
  • What to do when inappropriate behaviour happens? Define, Defer, Distract, Defuse and Deal.

Module two

This module will cover:

  • Introduction: Handling meltdowns and misunderstandings;
  • How to help children understand their emotions;
  • Making mistakes, the role of challenge and supporting children to 'fail';
  • Clarity of explanations, how to frame what you say so that children understand it; and
  • Self-regulation and language development, framing behaviour to support metacognition (thinking about thinking).

Both modules consists of a short introduction video followed by four videos, between 5 and 10 minutes long. Each video covers one aspect of the overall topic, and ends with a set of reflection points for you to discuss with your staff team.  During reflection points you are encourage to pause the video to reflect and make notes.
