A 2-hour training workshop based around the WellComm Speech and Language Toolkit.  This course is designed to develop practitioners' skills and confidence in supporting children under 5 years who are at risk of developing speech, language and communication difficulties. It can also be used to support those with English as an additional language.  The course uses interactive teaching methods, practical activities and group discussion to engage learners.

What will I learn?

At the end of this course, we will be able to:

  • Understand how to assess children working below their age related expectations;
  • Know how to support children working below their age related expectations;
  • Carry out appropriate interventions either in small groups or on an individual basis;
  • Accurately monitor children's progress; and
  • Make effective use of the Early Years Pupil Premium and Pupil Premium Grant.

The WellComm resource pack will be given out to settings that do not already have a copy according to Bolton Start Well records.  If you already have a pack, please bring this to the session.

The 'WellComm Speech and Language Toolkit Resource' is a comprehensive assessment and intervention toolkit, which includes:

  • Screening Tool - including 'Handbook' and 'The Little Book of Rules', enabling early identification of areas of concern within language, communication and interaction development; and
  • Intervention Resource - including 'The Big Book of Ideas', 'The Picture Book' and 'The Support Language at Home CD'. These resources offer a range of stimulating, fun and play based activities designed to address children's language needs.
