This is a session based around the WellComm Speech and Language Toolkit and is designed to develop practitioners’ skills and confidence in supporting children under 5 years who are at risk of developing speech, language and communication difficulties. The course uses digital interactive teaching methods and resources, practical activities and group discussions to engage learners.

As part of the course, you will receive access to an in-depth, pre-recorded training video which you will need to view prior to the online interactive Q&A session on the 8th July 2021, 3:30pm - 4:30pm. 

The one hour interactive session on 8th July will provide an opportunity to consolidate learning as well as time to ask any questions that you may have.

To participate fully in this session it is essential you have a copy of the WellComm Toolkit to use during this training. The WellComm Toolkit resource will be made available to settings that do not already have a copy according to Bolton Start Well records.  If you do not have a copy in your school/setting, please contact Start Well by telephone: 01204 338149 or email: to make arrangement to collect a copy from Harvey Start Well Centre. 

How will this session help?

At the end of this course, we will be able to:
• Understand how to assess children working below their age related expectations;
• Know how to support children working below their age related expectations;
• Carry out appropriate interventions within a whole class or group environment, in small groups or on an individual basis;
• Accurately monitor children’s progress; and
• Make effective use of Early Years Pupil Premium and Pupil Premium Grant.

This workshop is aimed at all practitioners working with children aged 6 months to 6 years and their families.

Course Delivery

This course will be delivered using a blended learning approach and will include a recorded training session and an interactive workshop. The training may include a participant pack to support the training and link to the workshop.

Access is via Microsoft Team.

Once you sign up for the course, you will be sent a welcome email with a link to view the pre-recorded element of the training, and any supportive material appropriate to the training.  Should you need to, you will be able to pause the presentation while you view it or view it again using the same link. This link is intended for you only and should not be shared, copyright applies.

The online workshop on via Microsoft Teams is an essential element of the training and is an opportunity to get together with a member of the Communication and Language Development team and others following this session to ask questions, share good practice with your peers and complete the final element of the training.

You will also be able to submit questions in advance via  Please state the name and date of the workshop on any emails.

Please note, you can access Microsoft Teams Live via a tablet, computer or smart phone device and you can join as a guest if you do not have an account.  Alternatively, the Teams app can be downloaded for free onto a smart device prior to the event from the App Store or Google Play.
