Understanding the links between language and mental health

Speech, language and communication are vital skills that are linked with many different areas including children and young people’s mental health.

ICan have produced a useful factsheet on Language and Mental Health that addresses the worries of many parents around their child’s mental health and emotional wellbeing.

Their factsheet looks at the links between speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) and mental health, why children with SLCN may be vulnerable to mental health difficulties, how to spot a child who may be struggling and how to support their mental health and emotional wellbeing.

The full factsheet, which also includes links to local organisations who can offer further help, can be accessed here.

For more help around this issue, please contact our Speech and Language team on 01204 338355, email us on BoltonStartWell@Bolton.gov.uk or visit our website.

Talking Point, a website devoted to children’s communication, is also a useful resource for more information on SLCN.
